2 James Young at Addiewell (c.1865-c.1870)
Following the success he enjoyed at Bathgate Chemical Works, James Young formed Young's Paraffin Light & Mineral Oil Company Ltd and built Addiewell Chemical Works to exploit the rich oil shales of the West Calder area. Addiewell was the first large scale shale oil works and refinery to be built, occupying a 70 acre site including facilities for candle making and the production of ammonium sulphate. In addition to being the majority shareholder of the company, Young also held the position of general manager until he resigned from the company in 1870.
